Homemade meals in a cozy restaurant specializing in typical dishes of the region. Outstanding is its excellent cuisine, based on natural and traditional products from the area, such as sausages, cheeses and sweets (nougat, “cakes”, “brandy rolls”, etc.), along with emblematic dishes from inland Castellón, such as the “llorigó with garlic and oil” or grilled meats, such as the delicious Maestrat lamb chops.

Route of the Penyagolosa villages

The Route of the Penyagolosa villages is a circular mountain route that passes through the four villages in the “Penyagolosa North Villages County” (Mancomunitat de Penyagolosa-Pobles del Nord).

This route runs largely through the Penyagolosa Natural Park, and is designed for hiking. In order to follow the route, you need to download the routes using the Wikiloc mobile application. This application, using a QR code, downloads the route and guides us using the GPS in our phone.

The municipalities of Atzeneta del Maestrat, Benafigos, Vistabella del Maestrat and Xodos offer us a different and unique landscape. With a very steep orography, steep slopes and deep ravines. These characteristics providen de are with an extraordinary flora and fauna.

In terms of flora, holm oaks, white and black pines and pine trees with abundant shrub vegetation stand out. Numerous birds and mammals coexist in this ecosystem, including the mountain goat, the wild boar, the badger and the genet.

It takes between 2 and 5 days to complete this route, as it is designed to be done in 5 different stages. The whole route has 2.200 meters elevation gain and a distance of approximately 60 kilometers.

Route of the Penyagolosa villages – Stage 1: Atzeneta del Maestrat – Benafigos

This stage follows the entire PR route (yellow / white).

We start from Atzeneta del Maestrat towards “Sant Gregori’s” hermitage. From here we start the PR passing by “Masia Fenollera” farmhouse and “Mas de l’Olivar”. Finally, we will reach Benafigos. The first kilometers of ascent have broader paths, but these will get narrower further on. At this point we find magnificent views. Enjoy them!

Route of the Penyagolosa villages – Stage 5: Xodos – Atzeneta del Maestrat

Final stage that follows the path of the Full Moon GR33 (red / white) “Camí dels Pelegrins” (Pilgrims path), as it passes by the “Bernat” hill and “Sant Miquel de les Torrocelles”. After “Sant Miquel” we will turn off to the Castle of Atzeneta del Maestrat.

Pere Tomàs cave

“Pere Tomàs’s” cave is located at the foot of the “Barranc del Gorg” ravine, it was used as a refuge for shepherds from the area during winter . It has a petroglyph and paintings.

Cave of the Aragonese

This cavity is two meters long and is surrounded by a beautiful karst landscape and flanked by the “Barranc del Regall” and the “Badall de la Roca”.

Castle circular

The Castle natural place path has a great natural and cultural value. Outstanding are The Castle fortification and the hermitage of Sant Joan stand out, as well as the richness and uniqueness of the landscape, as part of the route runs along the Rambla del Castell.

Autumn is the perfect season to go in search of mushrooms and fungi. An activity that you can combine with walks in nature, the visit to charming villages such as Vistabella del Maestrat, Xodos, Benafigos or Atzeneta del Maestrat and the tasting of tasty seasonal dishes in restaurants in the area.

This is an unforgettable experience for all those who decide to delve into this wonderful activity collecting wild mushrooms and fungi.

We will enter the Penyagolosa with the mycologist to discover the most well-known edible fungal species of each season. The mycologist will advise us at all times and will explain how to look for mushrooms, where to look for them, those that we find if they are good to eat or not always with explanations adapted to the type of group.

Meet Penyagolosa’s black or summer truffle

You’ll search this black diamond from our mountains will accompanied by an expert truffle grower and his truffle dog. You will observe how the trained dog finds the truffles, you will know what the truffle is, where, how and when it is produced and harvested, and how it is used in cooking. In addition, you will have the opportunity to purchase fresh truffles.

Masia Rural Canalisos

Masia Rural Canalisos is an essential place for travelers looking for tranquility and disconnection, in contact with nature. The accommodation consists of a typical farmhouse in the area, which continues to maintain the original essence.

It has an attic and three double bedrooms, two bathrooms with shower, kitchen equipped with oven, hob, microwave, refrigerator, coffee maker, toaster, paellero (8 servings) to make paella on the barbecue, firewood and heating. It also has a high chair and a mini cot.

It has a children’s playroom and a dining room with a fireplace.

Outside we find the terrace, barbecue, picnic area and wonderful views of the peak of Penyagolosa, Benafigos, Vistabella, Culla… as it is located at the top of a pine forest in the middle of nature. Its main feature is the tranquility.

Masia Rural Canalisos is 7 km from the town of Atzeneta del Maestrat and 45 km from Castellón de la Plana.

El Magranar

The Mangranar is in itself a rural tourism center with self-catering accommodation, a leisure area, a swimming pool and a cozy restaurant specializing in typical local dishes. It has 4 rural houses and a rural hotel.

The Mangranar has in its accommodation a complete equipment, central heating, television, as well as being an ideal place for business meetings, family stays or groups of friends.

In summer, enjoy the Mangranar, enjoy the coolest temperatures of the mountain without sacrificing the sun, bathing and always with the shade of nature, a pine forest of 100 hectares.

Masia Atalaya

Masia Atalaya, a 200-year-old building surrounded by almond trees, olive trees, fruit trees, vineyards and pine trees.

Masia Talaia consists of:

MONLLEO: House with two bedrooms. One with a double bed and another with two singles. Equipped with abathroom with shower, kitchen, air conditioning, heating, tv and wifi.

RAMBLA DE LA VÍUDA. Studio equipped with double bed, sofa bed, bathroom with shower, kitchen, air conditioning, heating, television and wifi. (two to four people)

MEANES. Room equipped with double bed, bathroom, air conditioning, heating, television and wifi.

We have a swimming pool (4 x 9m), a petanque court, hammocks, a swing, a trampoline and a fitness area. We have children games like football, badminton, tennis and a tent with toys.

We also have several terraces where you can rest, eat or just sunbathe.

Located in Atzeneta del Maestrat.
It has 8 rooms, all with heating, overlooking the church. Two of them have a bathroom, and the others have bathrooms located in the hallway.

“El Bovalar”

The Bovalar Route takes us throughout the Bovalar Hills and from its summit, at 636 meters, we can see spectacular panoramic views of Atzeneta del Maestrat, with the town, the different ravines and, in the background, the mountain range overviewed the giant of the Penyagolosa.

Windmills

This rout connects the town of Atzeneta with the natural natural area of the “Windmills”, where it connects with another route that reaches the village of Culla.
