The Assumption Parish Church

This church, under the invocation of the Ascension of the Virgin, was built between the 16th and 17th centuries, although the dates of 1604 and 1624 are engraved on the portal of the same.

Its construction replaced the primitive medieval church, located next to the old “Vistabella Castle”, next to the current church. It seems that this church was raised as a mountain of earth between the church and the castle was constructed in such a way that the highest part of the bell tower was united with the castle by an artificial mountain. Another legend says that large scaffolding was created that went from the castle to the current location of the church instead of the sand mountain.

This Renaissance style parish church is considered the most important of this style in the province of Castellón. It stands out for its extraordinary proportions, with the three naves, the central one is much larger than the lateral ones, separated by large pillars and joined by large barrel vaults.

In its impressive Renaissance façade, the work of Joan Anglés, there is a magnificent cover framed by a pointed roof. It has ten niches, currently empty, which prior to the Spanish Civil War, were occupied by figures with religious and allegorical significance. With great prominence of Saint Bartholomew and Saint John, as patron saints, on one side and on the other of the Ascension, to whom the temple is dedicated.
